Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Play-By-Mail Game?

Play-by-Mail, or PBM, is a form of turn-based gaming. For more details, please click on the "What is Play-by-Mail" link at the top of this page.

What is Middle-earth Play-By-Mail?

Middle-earth Play-By Mail is a game set in the world of Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings". For more details, please click on the "About Me-PBM" link at the top of this page.

How can there be a game when Tolkien has already written what happens?

Middle-earth Play-By-Mail is set in the world of Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings", but does not follow the plot of his books. Instead, each of the three different games is set at a different time in the history of Middle-earth. What happens from that point depends on the players.

So do I get to play Tolkien's Characters?

In the 1650 and 2950 scenarios you run characters taken from Tolkien's world. Alternatively, in the Fourth Age (FA 1000) scenario, you are free to create your own characters and nation.

Why are there no pictures from the film on your site?

Because Middle-earth Play-By-Mail is based on Tolkien's books, not the film. Just as the film offers an interpretation of Tolkien's world, so does this game.

How do I start playing?

Whilst GSI owns Middle-earth Play-By-Mail, it does not run games. Instead, we have several companies around the world who run them for us in different languages. To find out who runs Middle-earth Play-By-Mail in your country, please click on the "E-mail" link at the top of this page.
